Sarfaraz Shaikh, 25, the sole accused in the murder of HDFC executive Siddharth Sanghvi, has told police that prior to attacking Sanghavi, he had attempted to target for a robbery another person who had arrived in the parking lot at Lower Parel’s Kamala Mills Compound some time before the banker did.
A police officer said that Shaikh also admitted
that he had left the parking lot late in the night, after 11pm, because
he feared getting stuck in heavy traffic after he had committed the
crime at around 8pm and also because he felt disposing of the body at
that hour would be harder. After the murder, he kept Sanghavi’s body in
the leg space near the rear seat in the car and bid his time pretending
to do some work in the lot, the officer said.
The NM Joshi Marg police are trying to figure out
who Shaikh’s earlier target might have been, as he could be made a
witness. A police team late on Monday night carried out a search of
Shaikh’s house in Koparkhairane and seized his passport and bank
statement (see graphic).
Police said they were interrogating Shaikh,
remanded in their custody till September 19 by the Bhoiwada court, and
trying to verify his claims. “We are trying to clear every doubt. Shaikh
is shrewd and knows ways to dodge police. He has initially misled us,
so we have to corroborate whatever he says,” a senior officer said.
Police are also trying to corroborate the timeline
of the incident given by him and his account of a tussle between him
and his victim as there are no injury marks on Shaikh’s body.
Police may also recreate the crime scene to get a better understanding of how the murder was committed in the parking area.
