MUMBAI: The city crime branch has made a major breakthrough in the case of a 50-year-old businessman from south Mumbai being abducted with the arrest of a key member of a kidnapping gang from Jaipur. The anti-extortion cell has arrested Sakib Jumma Khan (27) and are looking for three other accused, including Rahul Jain, the gang leader. TOI was the first to report this case in its December 3 edition.

Rahul Jain had lured Hemant Parikh, who runs a copper trading shop at VP Road, through WhatsApp, saying he has about seven tonnes of copper which he wants to dispose off at a throwaway price of Rs 3.50 per kg. He also invited Parikh wanted to his Gurgaon godown.

A car received Parikh at the airport but he was driven to a remote village where Khan confined him in a small hut and robbed him of his belongings. "Later Jain joined Khan and they assaulted Parikh and demanded Rs 30 lakh. They also forced Parikh to tell them his debit card PIN and withdrew Rs 90,000 in a week,"a source said.

Parikh was forced to ask his wife to arrange for Rs 30 lakh without telling her that he had been kidnapped. Jain took the money through hawala.

A tip from the hawala operator later helped cops in tracing Sakib. He has been booked for kidnapping, assault, arms case and extortion and will be produced in the court on Friday . The cops are trying to trace Jain who is wanted in several kidnapping cases.
