MUMBAI: The city crime branch has made a major breakthrough in the case of a 50-year-old businessman from south Mumbai being abducted with the arrest of a key member of a kidnapping gang from Jaipur. The anti-extortion cell has arrested Sakib Jumma Khan (27) and are looking for three other accused, including Rahul Jain, the gang leader. TOI was the first to report this case in its December 3 edition.

Rahul Jain had lured Hemant Parikh, who runs a copper trading shop at VP Road, through WhatsApp, saying he has about seven tonnes of copper which he wants to dispose off at a throwaway price of Rs 3.50 per kg. He also invited Parikh wanted to his Gurgaon godown.

A car received Parikh at the airport but he was driven to a remote village where Khan confined him in a small hut and robbed him of his belongings. "Later Jain joined Khan and they assaulted Parikh and demanded Rs 30 lakh. They also forced Parikh to tell them his debit card PIN and withdrew Rs 90,000 in a week,"a source said.

Parikh was forced to ask his wife to arrange for Rs 30 lakh without telling her that he had been kidnapped. Jain took the money through hawala.

A tip from the hawala operator later helped cops in tracing Sakib. He has been booked for kidnapping, assault, arms case and extortion and will be produced in the court on Friday . The cops are trying to trace Jain who is wanted in several kidnapping cases.

MUMBAI: Former journalist S Balakrishnan's NGO won the auction of Dawood Ibrahim's property, Hotel Raounak Afroz, now known as Delhi Zaika, by making a bid of Rs 4.28 crore on Wednesday. The Dawoodi Bohra Trust lost narrowly with a bid of Rs 4.27 crore. Balakrishnan's NGO Desh Seva Samiti will have to deposit Rs 3.98 crore within 30 days; it had already deposited an earnest payment of Rs 30 lakh.

The property, a few meters away from Dambarwala Building on Pakmodia Street, Bhendi Bazaar, where Dawood once lived, measures 45 sq m (485 sq ft) and has a market price of Rs 6-8 crore, sources say.

The competent authority, which enforces the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act, or SAFEMA, held an auction of seven properties at Diplomat Hotel, Colaba, on Wednesday. Only Delhi Zaika belonged to Dawood. Fifteen businessmen from Mumbai and Gujarat bid for the other properties, all seized by central agencies as their owners were embroiled in various offences.

Officials said Dawood's property had three bidders in all, the last being an unknown businessman. Bidding started with the Bohra Trust submitting a bid of Rs 1.72 crore, going all the way up to Rs 4.27 crore. Balakrishnan submitted the ultimate price. "Officials of the trust remained silent. The auction officials called ten, before announcing that the former journalist was the highest bidder. Later, officials waited for e-auction, in which they didn't get the expected response. After waiting till 4pm, they announced the winner," said an official. The trust, which is carrying out a big redevelopment project in the area, wanted to include the property.

Aamir Siddhiqui, owner of the Delhi Zaika brand of restaurants, said, "We had taken the place on rent through an agent in 2010 and left the place in 2013.The place is no more being operated as Delhi Zaika. The restaurant was shifted to Grant Road in 2013. The place was sealed and hence we were ordered not to remove our nameplate or our materials inside the restaurant."

There was some confusion at the venue and complaints too.Veena Desai, a native of Surat, said she bought agricultural land in Daman a few months ago, but the competent authority informed her that her bidding had been cancelled and the land was to be re-auctioned. She claimed that she reached the bidding venue in Colaba on Wednesday with a demand draft, but was not allowed inside.

Delhi-based advocate Ajay Srivastav claimed he bought a Nagpada property belonging to Dawood in 2001 in a similar auction for Rs 2.5 lakh, but has been struggling ever since to get pos session. He was in Colaba on Wednesday to bid for another property, but changed his mind at the last moment. "The government has failed to physically hand over the property to me. I backed out thinking I will again have to invest, Rs 1.18 crore this time, and then run from court to court to seek possession. What's the point?" he said.
